Abstract : Clinical investigations, laboratory experiments, and mathematical simulation techniques have demonstrated that current methods of hemodilution extracorporeal circulation are capable of producing significant depression of plasma potassium. This may lead to cardiac arrhythmias in those patients with pre-existing depletion of total body potassium. As predicted by the mathematical model, the simple addition of potassium ion to the crystalloid hemodiluent does not prevent the depression of plasma potassium. However, adjusting the oncotic pressure to approximate normal plasma, together with the addition of potassium chloride, does offer protection from this hypokalemia.
