Abstract : The paper describes a possible method of determining the extent of intensity fluctuations within a laser beam as a function of time. It is applicable to very short pulses, approximately 20 nanoseconds in duration, as well as longer pulses and C.W. because the beam is not sequentially scanned. A given part of the beam cross section can be compared with any other part at all times during the pulse. The temporal stability of a Korad, Model K-1500 giant pulse ruby laser has been investigated. The near-field beam pattern was transformed by an image dissector into a one-dimensional image. This image was then swept across a photographic film; in this way the beam intensity distribution was recorded as a continuous function of time. From this record it was determined that mode jumping was not occurring. (Author)
