Abstract : The distribution of the axial component of displacement in the plans of thin, unilayer, S-glass fiber reinforced epoxy composite plates subjected to quasi-statically increasing tension from zero to failure in the direction of the fibers is established experimentally. The experimental results are used to evaluate the strain distribution throughout the surface of the specimens during the process of loading. The experimental results are compared with those obtained on the basis of theoretical analysis for establishing the distribution of stress in unilayer fiber reinforced plates, subjected to uniaxial tension in the direction of the fibers. The experimental results present new insight on the influence of the ineffective length of broken fibers on the strength of fiber reinforced composites. (Author, modified-PL)
