Abstract : This investigation was designed to relate the strength of the lamina, orrectangular plate elements, considered to be dependent on voids, viewed astiny cracks, to the fracture toughness of the material. A LINEAR ELASTICFRACTURE MECHANICS ANALYSIS WAS USED. The fracture strength of the compositeis described in terms of the applied stress, the crack length, and stressintensities in the crack tip region. The macroscopic portion consisted ofthe determination of the tensile strength of a parallel filament compositefor fiber orientations between 0 and 90 degrees with respect to the loadingaxis. A microscopic examination of these specimens was also conductedas well as of a second series of tensile specimens designed for testingunder the microscope. (P.S.-PL)
