Abstract : Examination was made to determine the modes of failure of balanced angle-ply laminates and the critical stresses which lead to the characteristic appearance of the failure. A FRACTURE CRITERION IS PROPOSED WHICH OFFERS A METHOD FOR THE PREDICTION OF STRENGTH OF ANGLE-PLY LAMINATES WHEN THE PROPERTIES OF INDIVIDUAL LAYERS ARE KNOWN. Balanced symmetric and non-symmetric angle-ply specimens of FRP/epoxy were tested in simple tension to failure and a microscopic investigation of the fracture surfaces was conducted. The presence of two modes of failure is suggested. For small angles with respect to the loading direction, failure of brittle, balanced symmetric, angle-ply laminates is due primarily to rapid crack extensionfrom crack-like delaminations between plies.
