Abstract : Spline functions are shown to exist minimizing the quadratic functional B(u,u) with associated selfadjoint, possibly singular, Euler operator Lambda. The singularity of Lambda is restricted by the hypothesis that the reciprocal of the leading coefficient be integrable and finitevalued at interior points. (Author)
