Abstract : Spline functions are shown to exist minimizing the quadratic functional B(u,u) with associated self-adjoint, possibly singular, Euler operator Lambda. The singularity of Lambda is restricted by the hypothesis that the reciprocal of the leading coefficient be integrable and finite-valued at interior points. (Author)
