Abstract : A new procedure is described for estimating the size distribution parameters from a micrograph of solid particles. The method is more efficient than traditional methods and permits an estimate to be made of the areas of individual profiles by counting the number of dots, in an equispaced lattice array, that fall within the image profiles. Errors in the estimated areas of the individual profiles are distributed in such a manner that they tend to cancel, giving high precision in the estimated values of the mean and standard deviation of the size distribution. The potential usefulness of the dot-counting procedure is demonstrated, using a simulated array of particle profiles. The new method has the additional advantage that it reduces the subjective element in the operator's performance and thus increases interoperator correlation. (Author)
