Abstract : The report describes biological observations of the deep scattering layers taken from the deep submergence research vehicle DEEPSTAR 4000, which operated for the Naval Underwater Systems Center between the Gulf of Mexico and the Gulf of Maine from July to October 1967. Generally, more sound scatterers were observed where the DSL was recorded than in the waters above or below these depths. Probably because of the limited number of biological dives conducted, no statistical differences in animal numbers were found between stations over the large geographical range sampled. The report also describes supplementary observations on detritus, visibility, and bioluminescence. (Author)
