Abstract : Methodological developments consisted of: The improvement of the BUGRAM GRAMMATICAL PATTERN GENERATING SYSTEM (a program for producing outline drawings of insects); The development of an improved method for procuring judgments in paired comparisons tasks (this technique involves the comparison of stimuli with previous defined 'standards'); The production of a standard set of measured forms for further research in pattern perception. A study involving the similarity judgments of pairs of BUGRAM insect patterns has shown a good compatibility between the human encoding system and the grammar underlying the BUGRAM program. Additionally, further empirical work on the spatial presentation of information has aided in delimiting the properties of the spatial storage system. Theoretical accomplishments included: A theoretical integration of findings related to the context dependent nature of feature selection; The preliminary development of a dynamic memory model which forms hierarchical feature 'chunks'; The integration of a number of modeling components into a composite model based on grammatical encoding.
