Abstract : Condensation of ethanol by the homogeneous nucleation of liquid droplets has been studied in a supersonic nozzle. Continuous static pressure measurements along the nozzle centerline and light scattering measurements permit the condensation process to be resolved in detail. Nucleation rates found in the present work are in approximate agreement with previous results from diffusion and expansion cloud chambers. It is found that the classical theory with the assumptions of Dunning (1969) and Reiss (1970) predicts the experimental conditions of onset. The pressure variations beyond the onset point are used to study the droplet growth process. It is shown that a simple kinetic growth law with a constant condensation coefficient describes the condensation process very well. (Author)
