Abstract : Studies were made of the accumulation of plutonium 239 by Ascophyllum nodosum and marine phytoplankton and also of polonium 210 by macrophytes under the influence of cell respiration inhibitors. It was established that plutonium and polonium are present in sea water in the form of colloid particles. Sodium cyanide evokes a uniform suppression of plutonium 239 and polonium 210 accumulation in plant cells, while ammonium chloride momentarily stimulates accumulation. It is demonstrated that build-up of plutonium 239 by marine algae is an active process and is linked to the energy consumption of the cell. (Author)
