Abstract : The purpose of the investigation was to consider new principles and device concepts based on the EBIRD (Electron Beam Ionization of semiconductoR Devices) operating principle, and to study those principles and device concepts which appeared to have the best potential of achieving successful operation. The ultimate goal was to evolve novel EBIRD devices which might demonstrate advantages over existing devices for use in advanced radar, communications, and ECM systems, especially at frequencies above 1 GHz. The devices and concepts which were analytically investigated for this purpose were: (1) an EBIRD distributed amplifier which employs a microstrip semiconductor target, (2) large transit-angle (about 3pi) operation of EBIRD targets, (3) an EBIRD class-C oscillator, (4) a device incorporating both EBIRD and avalanche diode operating principles, and (5) possible combinations of EBIRD and LSA (Limited Spacecharge Accumulation) bulk effect principles. Performance estimates, design information, and comparisons with other devices are given, for most of the novel devices considered. (Author)
