Abstract : Glycogens from rat livers were isolated by mild extraction procedures 24 hours after a 1000-rad gamma ray whole-body dose to the animals and were analyzed by physical-chemical methods. Glycogens obtained from irradiated animals have a higher average chain length and consequently a lower degree of branching than glycogens from nonirradiated animals. The biosynthesis of such an abnormal polysaccharide appears to be related to radiation-induced alterations in the relative activities of glycogen synthesizing enzymes that have been previously reported.
