Abstract : A study has been made of the use of the generalized Laguerre functions for impulse response identification. The method due to Dooge allows the series expansion coefficients of the impulse response to be calculated from the coefficients of expansion for the input and output signals. This method has been applied to actual response data involving the measurement of tracer pulse responses in a packed column. Further a method of determining the response of the generalized Laguerre system to an arbitrary input has been developed. A technique of minimizing the integral of the square error was applied to the problem of expressing the output response as a series expansion of these response functions for the Laguerre system. This technique is evaluated and compared to the Dooge method for the data curves. (Author)
