Abstract : In recent times the Cepstrum technique has been applied with varying degrees of success to problems in seismology and speech analysis. Developed by Bogert, et al, as a technique to detect time delayed signals or echoes, Cepstrum consists of a spectral analysis of the log power spectrum of a time series. In the mathematical development of Cepstrum, it is necessary to approximate a logarithm function by a function which is linear in one parameter, the degree of approximation depending on values of the same parameter. The result of this approximation is to place undue restrictions on the generality of the model. The purpose of the paper is to derive an alternate technique, comparable to Cepstrum, in which a logarithmic approximation is not used and the generality of the model is preserved. (Author)
