Abstract : The general objective of the project has been to characterize the ultrastructure of bacterial spores with physical, chemical, and physiological methods. Where possible, the results have been extended to considerations of practical problems of infectious disease, sterilization, and preservation, relatable to program objectives in microbiology of the Office of Naval Research. Specific objectives of the project are evident in the individual subprojects undertaken, as follows: (1) Structural details of anthrax spores during stages of transformation into vegetative cells; (2) Cytological features of anthrax spores phagocytized in vitro by rabbit alveolar macrophages; (3) Cytology of Bacillus anthracis; (4) Chemical composition of exosporium from spores of B CILLUS CEREUS: (5) Paracrystalline sheets reaggregated from solubilized exosporium of Bacillus cereus; (6) Dielectric study of the physical state of electrolytes and water within Bacillus cereus spores; (7) Macromolecular sieving by the dormant spore of Bacillus cereus. Each of these subprojects resulted in the publication of a technical article in a reputable scientific journal. (Author)
