Abstract : The paper considers an alternating renewal process with time to failure being distributed exponential (lambda), and with a general distribution for time to repair. Bounds and the precision of the bounds for the availability function were obtained. A computer program was written to solve for the availability function and some other quantities when the down distribution was a gamma (alpha, beta), alpha integer. The availability function with down distribution being a mixture of gamma-functions is considered. (Author)
