Abstract : In cells infected with Sendai, Newcastle disease and Venezuelan equine encephalomyelitis (VEE) viruses three classes of functioning virus-specific polyribosomes are formed with sedimentation constant of 110S ('light'), 160-200S ('medium') and 300S ('heavy'). RNAs associated with the polyribosomes are heterogenous and have sedimentation constants from 4S to 40-80S. Their heterogeneity is presumably associated with degradation of a more limited number of viral RNAs in the translation process. A replicative intermediae form of these viruses is also associated with the polyribosomes, which is evidence of coupling of the transcription and translation processes in the virus--infected cells.
