Abstract : A general stationary theorem provides the governing equations of a shell theory. Approximations of the displacements, strains and stresses, and the subsequent variations of the twodimensional fields, produce the equilibrium equations, constitutive equations and the straindisplacement relations of the shell theory. The variational procedure is used to derive a hierarchy of multicouple theories; the zero couple and onecouple theories are the membrane and bending theories, respectively. Both reduce to accepted approximations under the assumption of planestress. The procedure is also employed to obtain a firstapproximation which accounts for extension, flexure and transverse shear. The approach provides a simple and direct development of the nonlinear theory for thin elastic shells. (Author)
