Abstract : In addition to the requirement of small perturbations, the various linear wing theories at supersonic speeds are subjected in general to certain simplifications in order to reduce the amount of computation. Hence, these simplified theories possess a different degree of accuracy, and are limited in their range of validity. Under this aspect a comparative study is made of the exact linearized theory, the extended slender-body theory and the slender thin-body theory by comparing the respective theoretical results with each other and with experiment. Further interest in the flow past wings is concerned with the nature of transition from subsonic to supersonic leading edges, the amount of suction force at the leading edge, the influence of viscosity on the flow, and the non-linear effects due to increasing both Mach number and angle of incidence. In relation to this set of problems a detailed study was performed by considering eight wings with various slenderness ratios and plan forms. (Author)
