Abstract : In some aircraft disturbance and control transfer functions, a negative value for the term CL--CD alpha leads to instabilities and undesirable non-minimum phase effects. Reversal of the sign depends particularly on aspect ratio A for aircraft in landing configuration and occurs in the range A approx. = 3. For the aspect ratio A > 1, the approximation CL--CD alpha CL (1 - 3/A) is possible, which is sufficiently accurate for most applications in flight mechanics and flight control. (Author)
