Abstract : Disturbance equations relevant to linear stability of a turbulent shear layer are studied in the presence of a background field of locally homogeneous turbulence. Coupled momentum and Reynolds stress equations are closed by means of an ad hoc assumption for the intercomponent transfer of turbulent energy embodied in the pressure-velocity correlation. For solutions propagating obliquely in the plane of parallel mean flow, the three-dimensional problem is transformed to two dimensions. Eigenvalues of wavenumber, phase speed, and turbulent Reynolds number parameter along the neutral curve are computed for large disturbances and weak background turbulence. (Author)
