Abstract : The ultimate objective of the program is the attainment of a deeper understanding of the fundamental physics and chemistry of thin multimolecular films of organic liquids in contact with solid substrates and the application of this understanding to the solution of practical boundary lubrication problems. The report discusses the development of experimental techniques for the direct determination of the degree of order in films. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) techniques and optical techniques were chosen for evaluation. EPR studies of films of a substance known to be ordered (nematic liquid crystal, MBBA) were performed with vanadium acetylacetonate as the paramagnetic probe. (Author)
