Abstract : The purpose of the paper is to inquire to what extent and in what ways the image of China as a threat to Asia is founded on reality. The conclusion, in brief, is that there is a Chinese threat to Asia but that it is largely political and psychological rather than military, that it varies substantially in nature and degree from country to country, and that its seriousness depends on developments in the other Asian states and on trends in international politics no less than on Chinese policy.
