Abstract : The novel carborane mu-1,2-trimethylene-1,2-dicarba-closo-dodecaborane(10) has been prepared and characterized. The carborane was found to undergo bas degradation to form the mu-1,2-trimethylene-(3)-1,2-dicarbadeca hydro-nido-undecaborate (-1) ion which after deprotonation would react with transition metals to form several sandwich-bonded complexes of the type (M(n+)(B9C5H15)2)(n-4) and (C5H5)M(III)(B9C5H15). The formal nickel (IV) and cobalt(III) complexes were found to undergo thermal rearrangements and the kinetics of the facile ligand isomerizations of Ni(B9C5H15)2 were determined using reverse current chronopotentiometry and visible spectroscopy.
