Abstract : The concept and techniques for crack opening displacement (COD) testing of bend specimens are examined and the benefits of using fatigue-cracked, double-notch specimens highlighted by tests made at various temperatures and strain rates. Experiments are described which confirm the similar deformation and fracture behaviour of single- and double-cracked specimens and indicate the extent of the elastic component of the total displacement. The character of crack opening and the apparent centres of rotation about which the crack faces hinge have been determined from crack profile observations for mild-steel Charpy-size specimens.
