Abstract : The production of the state of spin alignment (or polarization) of molecules in the lowest triplet state at low temperatures is discussed. The conditions under which microwave radiation of resonance frequencies with the zero field (zf) transitions of these molecules would result in an observed change in the phosphorescence intensity are discussed. The basic equations relating these intensity changes to unimolecular rate constants are given. The application of phosphorescence-microwave double resonance (PMDR) spectroscopy to determine the different properties of the triplet state is summarized. Furthermore, the possibility of extending these techniques to determine the geometry of molecules in their triplet state, the assignment of the spatial symmetry of the emitting triplet state, as well as the order of its zero (zf) levels and the exact phosphorescence mechanisms is discussed, for molecules of C(2v), D(2h), or D2 symmetry.
