Abstract : Cubic mercury sulfide is a semimetal with an inverted gray-tin-type band structure. The reflectivity of vacuum-evaporated samples of beta-HgS has been measured over the energy range 0.5-10 eV at room temperature and 2.75-6.75 eV at 77K. The peaks found in the reflectivity spectrum have been assigned to interband transitions at the symmetry points gamma L and X in the Brillouin zone. The results are compared with the electronic transitions obtained from the empirically adjusted first-principles band calculations by Herman et al. The agreement between experiment and theory is good. (Author)
