Abstract : In order to improve heat transfer information needed for underground installations, the Environmental Engineering Section of the National Bureau of Standards has collected hourly earth temperature data for about a year at its site in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Hourly measurements of earth temperatures at selected depths, ground surface heat flux, soil moisture content, ambient air temperature and relative humidity, solar radiation, wind speed and direction, and rainfall were collected using an automatic data acquisition system. The report describes, in detail, the instrumentation system used. (Author)
