Abstract : The report discusses experimental and theoretical work done on the use of propellant-like compositions as generators for supplying gas mixtures for gas dynamic laser applications. The gaseous mixtures desired consist of high temperature, high pressure nitrogen, carbon dioxide and water vapor. The propellant-like compositions rely on sodium azide (NaN3) and an oxidizer as the principal source of gas. The mixtures considered to be most promising consist of sodium azide, sulfur, carbon, sodium nitrate and additional compounds to provide water vapor and improve the composition of the gas. This gas generator system shows considerable promise for gas dynamic laser applications by virtue of its simplicity, compactness, low cost and extremely short start up time. The major problem areas with the solid propellant mixture are achieving optimum quantity and composition of reaction products and improving propellant physical properties. (Author)
