Abstract : In order to determine the instability behavior of continuous nonconservative systems, the transcendental characteristic equation usually must be solved numerically. This procedure is often quite complicated, and it is therefore of interest to obtain some qualitative information on the nature of instability. In the paper expressions for the slopes of the loading-frequency curves are derived, necessary conditions for flutter and divergence instability are found, and the application of these results is discussed.
