Abstract : The properties of a satellite-to-ground whistler mode communication link are discussed. The propagation mechanisms of a whistler mode link are examined, present knowledge concerning the performance of spaceborne transmitting ELF/VLF antennas is summarized, and implications for communication systems are considered. The two major unknowns in the whistler mode communication link are the performance of a transmitting spaceborne ELF/VLF antenna, and the coupling of whistler mode energy through the ionosphere into the terrestrial waveguide. An experimental program to establish link performance is recommended. (Author)
