Abstract : Optical and electrical systems of intraship information transfer are compared with respect to cost and performance. Optical systems are shown to offer advantages over electrical for point-to-point links in which security and/or wide bandwidth are required. It is indicated that wide-bandwidth terminals can be built with commercial solid-state components for less than $100. The author recommends continued research in the area of optical integrated circuits and the development of military specifications for optical transmission lines and terminals. (Author)
