Abstract : The report covers the theoretical schemes and experimental techniques developed, tested, and applied to the actual realization of laser-pumped infrared quantum counter (IRQC) operation. The experiments involve (1) the growth of a variety of single crystals which might serve as appropriate hosts for active IRQC rare earth ions (2) the measurement of radiationless relaxation times, the knowledge of which is important in optimizing the quantum efficiencies of IRQC processes, (3) spectroscopic measurements for the determination of the energy level schemes of rare earth ions in crystals which are of interest as potential IRQC materials, (4) the optimization of the c.w. operation of rhodamine 6-G and fluorescein dye lasers which are used as the optical pumps in the upconversion processes, and (5) laser-pumped IRQC experiments.
