Abstract : The photochemical reaction of Cl2 and F2 at 365 Nm was found to have a quantum yield of less than 0.2 based on the amount of light absorbed by Cl2. It is concluded that neither the photochemical nor the thermal reaction proceeds via a long chain mechanism as was proposed for the thermal reaction. The photochemical reactions of ClF3 with and without added gases were investigated using the total radiation from a mercury vapor lamp. A gas chromatographic technique was employed to follow disappearance of reactants and formation of products. The photolysis of ClF3 leads to ClF and F2. Added oxygen leads to the formation of ClF3O in addition to ClF and F2. It was shown that ClF3O can be produced photochemically at room temperature and that there is no induction period. (Author)
