Abstract : The numerical results for the stress distribution in a laminated bimaterial composite containing a crack are presented for different combinations of elastic constituents. The crack is the result of a broken layer in an externally loaded composite. A method which may have general application is used to reduce a singular differential-integral equation to a tractable form for computations. The stress intensity factor associated with the in-plane extension of the crack is shown for various combinations of constituents. Estimates of the stress intensity factor which may be obtained without extensive numerical computation are also discussed.
