Abstract : The conditions for applicability of discriminant analysis in prognostic work are determined. It is shown that the usual method for making an optimum forecast using discriminant analysis cannot serve as a basis for determining the comparative success of a combination of prognostic methods. Some possible methods for evaluating the success of forests made using discriminant analysis and a broader class of stochastic forecasts are investigated. The conditions for optimum breakdown of the actual field into some group of nonintersecting classes are formulated. (Author)
