Abstract : The report gives preliminary results on the compression and tensile testing of SAE 1010 steel at 4.2K. At this temperature, which is far below the ductile-brittle transition temperature, the extended stress-strain behaviour in compression, even to strains on the order of 30%; is totally accounted for by the strain occurring during discontinuous load drops. Otherwise, the specimen exhibits continued elastic loading and unloading. These results are attributed to essentially elastic twinning of the steel whereby the twins and accommodating matrix flow produce a 'locked-in' state of deformation. (Author)
