Abstract : The propagation of elastic-plastic waves in truncated conical shells was studied. A theory of wave propagation based on the method of characteristics was developed. It involves the solution of the deformation equations by integration along the characteristics. A computer program for the CDC 6600 has been written and the predictions of the theory are in good agreement with the experimental results in both the elastic and the inelastic range. Waves in the shells are generated by axially impacting hard-wired stationary shells with sufficiently large flat-faced cylindrical projectiles. Strain histories at a number of stations along the shell were measured and recorded for comparison with the theoretical values. The experimental work covered impact speeds from 120 to 8,625 feet per second. (Author)
