Abstract : The paper contains numerical analysis and results of computer simulation for the nonlinear axial flow of a free surface liquid conductor under the influence of a time-varying magnetic field. The analysis is applicable to other physical systems, which can be described as initial value problems for a system of first-order quasi-linear, partial differential equations, possibly non-homogeneous with forcing and friction terms. Results are given for calculations on a fixed mesh by a Lax-Wendroff scheme, including a shock formation, propagation and reflection from the axis of symmetry; also integration along characteristics, for the continuous part of the field until a shock starts to form. In addition, a semi-analytic solution is worked out for the initial characteristic triangle, and its break-down point is estimated. Comparison among results obtained by the different methods is given, and application to configurations of plasma-confinement, astrophysical atmospheric and oceanographic problems pointed out.
