Abstract : The paper contains numerical analysis and results of computer simulation for the nonlinear axial flow of a free surface liquid conductor under the influence of a timevarying magnetic field. The analysis is applicable to other physical systems, which can be described as initial value problems for a system of firstorder quasilinear, partial differential equations, possibly nonhomogeneous with forcing and friction terms. Results are given for calculations on a fixed mesh by a LaxWendroff scheme, including a shock formation, propagation and reflection from the axis of symmetry; also integration along characteristics, for the continuous part of the field until a shock starts to form. In addition, a semianalytic solution is worked out for the initial characteristic triangle, and its breakdown point is estimated. Comparison among results obtained by the different methods is given, and application to configurations of plasmaconfinement, astrophysical atmospheric and oceanographic problems pointed out. (Author)
