Abstract : The theory presented here is an extension of the work by Pellinen, Moritz, and the author, which involves terms determined from the earth's topography and no isostatic assumptions. It is shown that the series developments by Molodensky, Brovar, and Moritz do neither lead to optimal nor to most convenient solutions and should be replaced in practical computations. The planar solution presented is accurate and simple in nature and particularly well-suited for calculations of deflections of the vertical. (Author)
