Abstract : The report illustrates the almost complete reliance a control engineer must have on computational machine aid when synthesizing controllers for extremely complex dynamical systems. It outlines both the steps which were taken in attacking one such problem and the results, and in the process points out those operations and manipulations which without modern computational equipment could not have been possible. The specific illustrative example used, an unstable dynamic balanced flexible beam assembly, is not critical to the points made; it is not difficult to visualize for other systems the consequences of insufficient accuracy and reliability in the computing machinery.
