Abstract : The 'thermal bar' has been studied in a quantitative manner in a laboratory model. The temperature and velocity fields are similar to those observed in the Great Lakes. The effects of variation of heat input, bottom slope, and initial temperature were studied. A linear physical model gives a reasonable first approximation to the speed of the 'thermal bar' in both the experimental model and the Great Lakes. (Author)
