Abstract : The atomistic and electron properties of single crystal surfaces of nickel, tungsten and iridium relevant to the binding of atoms and the emission of electrons were studied in detail using combined methods of low-energy electron-diffraction, Auger electron spectroscopy, field emission and thermal desorption spectroscopy. Important new models and principles critical to the phenomena of electron emission, field ionization, chemisorption and surface atomic structure were obtained. Results of these studies have considerable impact on the application of the surface electron physics of alkali metal coated transition metals in the development of electron emission and surface ionization devices. Detailed analyses of surface structure and bonding in xenon single crystals were also made for the first time in terms of the dependence of low energy electron intensity spectra in energy and temperature.
