Abstract : An electro-optical system at Harry Diamond Laboratories to telemeter the in-flight rotational characteristics of artillery rounds and rockets has been successfully adapted to the Air Force Blu-26 bomblet. The effort involved adapting the bomblet to accept multiple optical sensors about its axis of rotation and the design of a telemetry link. In this system, when a beam of sunlight passes through a pinhole and is swept across a V-slot, it produces two pulses per revolution. The average spacing between sets of pulses is related to the spin rate, and the ratio of the interval between individual pulses and pairs of pulses is an indication of yaw. (Author)
