Abstract : An optical model theory, extended to describe both elastic and inelastic scattering in the presence of reaction, leads to the conclusion that for a particular impact parameter in a two-level system, the probabilities of reaction from the internal states of a reactant approach a common value if inelastic energy transfer in very efficient, but have arbitrary values otherwise. From microscopic reversibility, a similar relation is deduced for two internal states of product. An extension to multilevel systems by use of a reduced S matrix is presented. A computational example is given for coupling of reaction and vibrational energy transfer. (Author)
