Abstract : Lines drawn through the centromeres of homologous chromosomes shown in karyographs have been found to intersect each other within the nucleus wall much more frequently than would be expected if the chromosomes were uniformly distributed over the area of the cell nucleus pictured in the karyograph. This report investigates the number of such intersections when the chromosomes are uniformly distributed over a spherical nucleus and projected by the camera onto the karyograph. This three-dimensional model produces a mean number of intersections which is closer to the observed value than the mean values from previously considered randomization models; however, the discrepancy between theoretical and observed values is still large enough so that other models merit investigation.
