Abstract : Synthetic polymers, such as alkyd and polyester resins, are incorporated as binders in protective coatings used for the maintenance of military equipment, and the type and amount of resin requisite for effective performance of formulated coatings are specified in military specifications governing the procurement of paint. The report describes a chromatographic procedure for the estimation of dicarboxylic acids and aromatic monocarboxylic acids in alkyd and polyester resins. The acids are converted to their butyl esters which are formed by refluxing a resin sample with butyl alcohol - boron trifluoride reagent. Gas-liquid chromatography is used for the separation of individual butyl esters, and chromatograms from the chromatographic analysis are used for the identification and estimation of carboxylic acids.
