Abstract : The significance of this analysis to the Air Force is to show that for certain applications ancilliary optics must be used with the laser to provide useful collimation of the laser energy. While radiation directly from a laser is inherently collimated, the degree of collimation is limited by the exit aperture of the laser and by other other characteristics peculiar to the laser as a generator of optical energy. In certain applications of the laser, such as long range photography, light radiating directly from the device is not sufficiently collimated to be useful. By employing additional optical elements, light from the laser can be recollimated to provide the desired performance. Selection and design of the ancillary optics is discussed in the report as well as the limitations to recollimation of radiation from a laser. (Author)
