Abstract : The vibrational excitation of HF and DF and the energy transfer efficiencies for various collision partners were investigated over the temperature and pressure ranges of 1400K to 4100K and 0.1 to 0.3 atm, respectively. The extent of excitation was determined as a function of time by continuously monitoring the infrared emission intensity at 4100 plus or minus 200/cm. Collisional efficiencies of H2O, D2O, NO, O, Cl, Br, and I in relaxing HF and of Cl and F in relaxing DF are reported. Atomic species were obtained by dissociation of larger molecules. All data were obtained behind incident shock waves. The mechanism for relaxation was found to depend greatly upon the collision partner considered. (Author)
